General anxiety, or fear, is usually generated by an unconscious response to an imagined scenario that may lead to harm. You have probably heard of the flight or fight response, where certain part of your brain perceives that you are in danger, your mind and body get ready to defend yourself, or flee and we experience this as anxiety and panic.
What causes these fearful imagined scenarios?
Mostly it is a result of a past experience, or an inability to deal with uncertainty in what may or may not happen. Treatment for anxiety, trains the mind to relax, accept things more as they are, and worry less. At the same time, it helps you to reset your automatic response to perceived dangers, so that you can enjoy less anxiety in everyday life, and adopt a more peaceful relaxed frame of mind.
If someone has a specific fear, such as flying or spiders, we will create a clear hierarchy of fears (the stimulus) and under hypnosis (in vitro) we will systematically "desensitise" each level of fear resulting in an automatic response to the stimulus of calm instead of fear.
