Hypnotherapy with Children
Hypnotherapy with children is a safe and natural way to help your child make the changes they want to make in how they think, feel and behave.
It works for children in the same way as adults, in that, the conscious mind is relaxed, making the unconscious more receptive to suggestion. However, the way in which hypnotherapy for children is delivered can be quite different and parents are, of course, asked to be present throughout.
Younger Children
For younger children (roughly ages 5 - 10), it is a very subtle approach. Verity will create a very light hypnotic state, just like that when a child watches television or playing, where they are completely engaged in that activity. This will be achieved by story telling or creative play using all of their favourite characters and their wonderful imagination to come up with solutions.
Older Children
For older children (around 8 - 10 upwards), they can be more willing to close their eyes and relax into an imaginative journey where they make the changes they want and pick up confidence etc along the way. This might be using Harry Potter, a football match, a pop star, this will depend upon your child's imagination.
Hypnosis for children is natural and safe
>> Hypnosis is not mind control. I cannot make your child think, feel or behave in any
way they do not wish to. Hypnosis for children utilises the high suggestibility of
children to encourage positive changes.
>> Hypnotherapy for children doesn't focus on the past or the problem but focuses on
how the child can think, feel and behave differently for positive results.
>> Verity usually sees younger children in her home to create a relaxed, familiar
atmosphere, or in some circumstances will come to your home.
The Process
The first stage is a discussion with you to understand your child and the changes you and your child wish to make. Verity will enquire about your child's special qualities to use these to increase self esteem and confidence by saying things like "Mummy tells me you always want to look after your little brother", "Daddy tells me you try really hard to learn your spellings" and incorporating these strengths into therapeutic techniques to develop other required resources, such as concentration or calm.
The next stage is for us to all meet together. Of course you should remain for all of the session(s) (depending upon the age of the child) but Verity would ask that at this meeting the talking is just between Verity and the child, in order to build rapport, trust and to understand how the child sees the problem and or solution. Verity might include you in part of the conversation, but will always ask the child if this is okay first.
Verity will try and find out when your child has successfully used the resources they need to use in the problem situation, in another situation, i.e. if your child is having trouble with bladder control at night, the session may focus on how well they control their bladder during the day, to focus on building their feelings of control.
Its not all about your child
There are times when the parents have to change the way they think or behave in order for their child to be able to think, feel or behave differently. Verity, whilst being very tactful will always be completely honest with you and advise you if she thinks it would beneficial for your child if the first course of action is for you to make some changes before considering therapy. For example, if your child has sleeping problems, Verity will first ask you if you are implementing a strict sleeping regime and to attempt this before she sees your child, or if your child has a phobia of, say lifts and you also have a phobia of lifts, your phobia will probably need to go if you wish your child to be free of theirs.
Reinforcing the change at home
Very often Verity will ask you to undertake exercises at home to reinforce the suggestions for change given to your child in therapy, such as creating imaginative stories with your child, drawing magic pictures to put under pillows at night time, sticker charts etc.
Verity has a full and up to date CRB check.
